Some Facts and Figures
There are presently 17 Schools and Colleges of Optometry in the United States and Puerto Rico. For the 2005 entering class, there were 2,585 applicants for 1,403 spots in optometry schools or about 1.8 applicants per opening. Compared to 2004, the number of applicants was up 2.2% and is up 27% since 2002. The State of Kentucky does not have a school or college of optometry, but has contracted with Southern College of Optometry in Memphis TN to take up to 8 KY residents, and the University of Alabama in Birmingham AL, and Indiana University in Bloomington, IN for 3 each. Students awarded KY seats pay in-state residents tuition.
